Privacy reform: security, serious invasions and AI governance
Privacy reform: security, serious invasions and AI governance. Enacted reform with staged commencement. Check coverage for each AI use case.
The 2024 reforms include security-related changes and a statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy. The tort commenced on 10 June 2025. Automated-decision privacy-policy amendments commence separately on 10 December 2026. These measures should not be presented as one simultaneous commencement.
Use-case investigation: identify intrusive recording, monitoring, biometric or inference activities; who authorised them; why processing is necessary; what safeguards exist; and what affected people are told. Record legal applicability, exceptions and retained evidence rather than treating a generic AI Policy as proof of compliance.
